Legal dictation software that gets citations and client names right
Stenograph lets attorneys, paralegals and legal assistants speak memos, letters and emails and see them appear, formatted, in Word, Outlook or the matter management system they already use. Case names, reporters, statutes and the spelling of every client and counterparty come from a legal vocabulary and your own firm dictionary, so the draft needs editing for substance, not for typos.
Listening
Drafting by voice for people who bill by the hour
Lawyers have dictated for generations because it is the fastest way to turn analysis into text. What changed is the tooling. Instead of a tape for a secretary, Stenograph produces the draft immediately, while the argument is still in your head. Most people speak far faster than they type, and on a long memo the difference adds up.
- Research memos and case assessments
- Client letters and engagement letters
- Emails to opposing counsel and clients
- File notes after calls and hearings
- Outlines of briefs and contract positions
Case names, citations and client names spelled exactly
A dictation tool that turns a party name into a common word creates risk in a legal document. The legal vocabulary covers Latin phrases, procedural terms, court names and citation patterns, so "Fed. R. Civ. P." and "F.3d" come out as written in a brief. Your dictionary adds what no vocabulary can know: client names, matter names, judges, opposing firms, defined terms from a contract.
- Citation formats for reporters, statutes and rules
- Client, party and witness names in the spelling you set
- Defined terms with the capitalization of your agreement
- One shared firm dictionary on Team and Enterprise
The page on custom vocabulary speech recognition explains how terms are added, imported and shared.
Memos, letters and emails in the right shape
Legal writing has conventions, and Stenograph follows them. In Word the structured style gives you headings such as Question Presented, Short Answer and Discussion when you speak them, numbered paragraphs when you enumerate, and full sentences throughout. In Outlook the formal style produces a proper greeting and sign off. Voice commands change the text without leaving the dictation.
- "new paragraph" and "make that a list" for structure
- "replace plaintiff with claimant" for terminology changes
- "more formal" for a letter going to a client or the court
- "make it shorter" for an email that needs to be read on a phone
Long documents in Word are covered on dictation software for microsoft word, and the full set of commands on voice commands for dictation.
Works in the tools your firm already runs
There is nothing to integrate. Stenograph types at the cursor in any desktop app on Mac or Windows, in web based matter and document systems through the Chrome extension, and on iPhone and Android through the keyboard. You can dictate a file note on the phone after a hearing and keep the same dictionary and styles on the office computer.
Notes from client meetings and calls
Meetings recorded on your device, with the consent your jurisdiction and your client relationship require, become a transcript with speaker labels plus a summary of decisions and action items. Recorded depositions or interviews you already hold can be uploaded as files and exported to Word or PDF with timestamps. More on ai meeting notes.
How confidential material is handled
Client confidentiality is your professional duty, so we explain the facts and leave the judgment with you. We do not claim that using Stenograph satisfies any particular rule of professional conduct; that assessment belongs to you and your firm.
Audio is processed and then deleted, never stored
Text history is optional and can be switched off or deleted at any time
Your content is never used to train AI models
Encryption protects data in transit and at rest
Enterprise adds SSO, SCIM, an audit log and data retention controls, and a DPA is sent by email on request

Estimate the value in billable time yourself
We do not publish promises about hours saved. A simple calculation with your own numbers is more honest. Take the minutes you spend typing a typical memo or letter, subtract the minutes it takes to speak and review it, multiply by the documents you write in a month and by your hourly rate. If the result is larger than the plan price, the tool pays for itself in your practice. For a single attorney, Solo costs 24 USD per month billed yearly; a firm of up to five people uses Team at 149 USD per month billed yearly.
Who it fits in a firm
Solo and Pro suit individual attorneys who draft heavily. Team suits small firms and practice groups that want consistent terminology and one invoice. Enterprise suits larger firms that need SSO and audit controls. See also dictation for lawyers and all plans on stenograph pricing.
Legal dictation questions
Will it spell my clients' names correctly
Yes, once you add them. Every name in your dictionary is spelled exactly that way in later dictations, and a firm dictionary is shared across Team and Enterprise accounts.
Does it handle legal citations
The legal vocabulary covers common reporters, rules and statute formats. Check pinpoint cites before filing, as you would with any draft.
Is Stenograph compliant with legal ethics rules
We do not make claims about ethics compliance. We describe exactly how audio and text are handled so you and your firm can make that assessment.
Can my assistant use the same dictionary
On Team and Enterprise, yes. Dictionaries and styles are shared across the account and managed in the admin console.
Can I cancel at any time
Yes. You keep access until the end of the paid period. Payments are final.
