Stenograph

Dictation for doctors who would rather spend the evening at home

Physicians, therapists and clinicians in private practice lose hours a week to letters, reports and notes written after the last patient leaves. Stenograph lets you dictate them between appointments, with drug names, dosages and anatomical terms spelled correctly and the text formatted as a letter or a structured note, inserted where your cursor is.

A typical clinic day with Stenograph

Before the first appointment you open yesterday's referral request. You press the hotkey and dictate the referral letter to a cardiologist in under two minutes. Stenograph writes the greeting, the reason for referral, the relevant history and current medication as a list, with "metoprolol succinate 50 mg once daily" spelled and formatted the standard way.

Between the third and fourth patient you have five minutes. You open a report template in your document editor and dictate the findings. When a sentence comes out too long, you say "make it shorter".

At lunch you reply to two messages from colleagues on your phone using the Stenograph keyboard, in a brief, conversational style.

At the end of the day, instead of an hour of typing, you dictate the remaining letters and review them. The microphone was on only while you spoke, and none of the audio was kept.

Medical vocabulary spelled the way you write it

Stenograph includes a medical vocabulary with drug names, anatomy, common abbreviations and dosage notation, and you add your own colleagues, referral partners and the terms specific to your specialty. Abbreviations such as "b.i.d." or "PRN" can be kept or expanded according to your preference. The custom vocabulary speech recognition page explains how to add and import terms, and the medical dictation software page describes the product for practices in more depth.

  • Drug names, strengths and dosing schedules
  • Anatomical and procedural terms
  • Abbreviations kept or written out, your choice
  • Names of referring physicians and practices

Letters, reports and notes in the right structure

Dictated text is formatted for the document you are writing. Referral letters get a greeting, a clear reason for referral and a closing. Reports get headings you define in a custom style. Notes can follow a fixed section order that you set once. For letters and reports produced from recorded consultations or dictated audio files, the medical transcription software page covers file transcription with timestamps and exports to Word and PDF.

How patient information is handled, stated plainly

We do not claim a certification such as HIPAA compliance, and we do not sign business associate agreements. Instead, here is exactly what happens. The microphone is on only while you speak, never in the background. Audio is processed by AI model providers and then deleted, it is not stored. Text history is optional, can be turned off and can be deleted at any time. Your content is never used to train AI models. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Clinicians should follow their organization's policy on patient identifiers, for example by dictating letters without names and adding identifiers in the record system. The dictation privacy page describes each step in full.

Which plan fits a clinician or a practice

SituationPlan
One clinician dictating letters and reports Solo, 24 USD per month billed yearly, 1,500 dictation minutes, medical vocabulary
Clinician who also transcribes recorded dictations and meetings Pro, 49 USD per month billed yearly, 3,000 dictation and 900 transcription minutes
Practice that wants shared terms and letter styles Team, 149 USD per month billed yearly, up to 5 seats
Larger group with SSO, audit log and retention controls Enterprise, 499 USD per month billed yearly, up to 20 seats

Group practices often use the shared dictionary for teams so referral partners and preferred terms are spelled the same in every letter. Monthly prices and limits are on the stenograph pricing page.

Questions clinicians ask

Is Stenograph HIPAA compliant?

We do not claim HIPAA compliance or any other certification, and we do not offer a BAA. We describe exactly how audio and text are handled: audio deleted after processing, optional and deletable text history, no training on your content, encryption in transit and at rest. Follow your organization's policy on patient identifiers.

Does it work with my record system?

Stenograph inserts text at the cursor, so it works in desktop and browser based record systems through the desktop app and the Chrome extension, without an integration.

Can I keep abbreviations as I use them?

Yes. Choose in settings whether abbreviations are kept or written out, and add your own to the dictionary.

Can I try it before paying?

Yes. The one-time demo on the home page lets you dictate a short letter with your own terms. After the demo, Solo costs 24 USD per month billed annually; we do not offer a zero price tier.
