Custom vocabulary speech recognition that knows your field
General dictation guesses at the words that matter most to you. Stenograph lets you teach it your own terms and switch on a professional vocabulary for law, medicine, software or finance, so client names, case citations, drug names and product identifiers arrive spelled the way you write them, every time you speak them.
Listening
Why generic dictation misspells the words you care about
A speech model learns from ordinary language. It hears "Kowalczyk" and writes something phonetic, it turns a statute section into a string of loose numbers, and it renders a framework name as two common English words. Those are exactly the words a reader notices first, and they are the ones you end up fixing by hand. The fix is not to speak slower or louder. The fix is to tell the system, once, which words exist in your work and how they are written.
- Surnames of clients, patients and colleagues with unusual spelling
- Citations, statute sections and docket formats
- Drug names, dosages and anatomical terms
- Product names, ticker symbols, code identifiers and acronyms
A personal dictionary you build in seconds
Open the dictionary in the app and type a term the way it should appear on the page. You can add an optional "sounds like" hint for names that people pronounce in different ways, and you can mark a term as case sensitive so "iOS", "McKinsey" or "eBay" never lose their capitals. Every term you add is used by every Stenograph app you sign into: the desktop app for Mac and Windows, the Chrome extension and the iPhone and Android keyboard. Add a client name on your laptop in the morning and it is spelled correctly on your phone in the afternoon.
- Type the term once, with its exact capitalization
- Add a pronunciation hint for names that sound unlike their spelling
- Import a list from a CSV file when you already keep one
- Edit or remove any entry whenever your matters, patients or projects change
Professional vocabularies for law, medicine, software and finance
On top of your own words, Stenograph ships with curated vocabularies for four fields. Each one covers the terminology people in that field use daily, along with the way it is normally written. You switch a vocabulary on in settings, and it works alongside your personal dictionary rather than replacing it.
- Legal: Latin phrases, court and filing terms, citation formats such as "42 U.S.C. § 1983" and reporter abbreviations
- Medical: drug names, anatomy, common abbreviations and dosage notation such as "5 mg twice daily"
- Software: framework and library names, cloud and DevOps terms, casing such as camelCase and snake_case
- Finance: instruments, accounting terms, ratios and currency notation
If you practice law, the legal dictation software page shows how this vocabulary fits a full working day. Clinicians can read about the medical vocabulary on the medical dictation software page.
Names, citations and identifiers spelled exactly
Spelling is only half the job. Stenograph also keeps the form of a term intact inside the sentence. A citation keeps its section sign and periods, a product name keeps its internal capital, an identifier keeps its underscores. When you say "the getUserProfile function returns null", the text reads exactly that, without a space inside the identifier. When you say "per Smith v. Jones", the case name lands in the shape a brief expects. Your terms also feed the formatting step, so a list of medications or a set of action items keeps each name correct after the text is structured. The ai text formatting dictation page explains how that structure is built.
Term limits on each plan
The number of custom terms depends on your plan. Limits are counted per month, shown in the app, and each one is a fixed monthly cap. Removing a term does not reduce what you have used in the period.
| Plan | Custom terms | Professional vocabularies |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | 500 | 1 of your choice |
| Pro | 2,000 | all four |
| Team | 10,000 shared | all four |
| Enterprise | 50,000 shared | all four |
On Team and Enterprise the terms live in a shared dictionary that an administrator manages for everyone, which is described on the shared dictionary for teams page. Full prices are on the stenograph pricing page, from 24 USD per month billed yearly.
What happens to your terms and your audio
Your dictionary is stored with your account so it can follow you between devices, and you can export or delete it at any time. The audio you dictate is processed and then deleted, it is not stored. Your text history is optional, can be turned off and can be deleted. Nothing you say or add to your dictionary is used to train AI models. All of it is encrypted in transit and at rest. The details are on the dictation privacy page.
Questions about custom vocabulary
How many words do I need to add before it helps?
One. Each term starts working the moment you save it. Most people begin with the twenty or thirty names they type most often and grow the list as new ones come up.
Can I use more than one professional vocabulary?
On Solo you choose one vocabulary, for example legal or medical. Pro, Team and Enterprise include all four, which suits people whose work crosses fields, such as a healthcare attorney or a fintech engineer.
Does the dictionary work in every app?
Yes. The dictionary belongs to your account, so it applies wherever Stenograph inserts text: email, documents, chat, browser forms, your code editor and the phone keyboard.
Can I try it before paying?
Yes. The home page has a one-time demo with a "Your terms" field, so you can type a few names and hear the difference with your own voice. Nothing is priced at zero, and the lowest plan is Solo at 24 USD per month on yearly billing.
Teach Stenograph your words once
Add your names, citations and identifiers, pick your field and speak normally. The text that lands at your cursor is the text you meant.
