Speech to Text Software for Lawyers and Legal Teams
Stenograph is speech to text software for lawyers. You speak into a microphone or your phone, and punctuated, paragraphed text appears at the cursor in Word, Outlook, Clio or any browser field, with your client names, courts and defined terms spelled correctly. The same account also turns recorded calls, interviews and dictated memos into transcripts with timestamps and speaker labels. Solo costs 24 USD a month billed yearly, Pro with 900 transcription minutes costs 49 USD, and every price is published.

Try Stenograph on your own voice
Record up to 30 seconds, or pick a ready-made recording, and see clean, formatted text with your terms.
This browser cannot record audio. Pick a ready-made recording below to see the formatted result.
Up to 10 words or names, separated by commas. Stenograph spells them exactly as you type them.
More options
Your clip is transcribed and formatted on our servers, and the audio is deleted right after processing. Your words are never used to train AI models.
Stenograph needs your microphone to record. Your browser asks once, and the microphone is on only while you speak.

See pricingSpeech to text for lawyers covers two different jobs
Lawyers searching for speech to text software usually mean one of two things, and the right tool differs.
- Live dictation. You talk and the words go straight into a document or email. This replaces typing for letters, memos, file notes and first drafts.
- Transcription of recordings. You have a client call, an intake interview or a dictated voice memo, and you want text afterward.
Most products do one well. Dragon Legal is strong at live dictation on Windows. Meeting bots and per minute services such as Otter, Sonix and Rev are built for transcripts. Stenograph covers both in one plan, so the attorney who dictates a letter in the morning can transcribe an afternoon client call without a second subscription.
What legal speech to text needs to get right
Names, courts and terms
A generic recognizer turns "Judge Okafor" into something unprintable. Add clients, opposing counsel, judges, courts, statutes and firm terms once to a personal dictionary and they are spelled right in every app. On Team the dictionary is shared across the firm.
Formatted output, not a wall of text
Say "email to Ms. Brandt confirming the closing moved to the 14th" and get a greeting, short paragraphs and a sign off. Filler words are dropped, lists and paragraphs are shaped as you speak.
Voice editing
"Make it more formal", "shorter", "delete the last sentence" and "new paragraph" work without touching the keyboard, which matters when you review a draft while standing or walking.
Works where you already work
Word, Outlook, Gmail, Google Docs, Clio, MyCase and any text field in a browser. There is no separate editor to copy from.
Mac, Windows and phone
Apps for Mac and Windows, a Chrome extension, and iPhone and Android apps. A Windows only product cannot follow an attorney who works on a MacBook and an iPhone.
Transcripts you can file away
Upload a recording or capture one on your own device, with consent where the law requires it. Export to Word, PDF, TXT or SRT.

Confidentiality and client data
Speech to text sends your audio to a service, so confidentiality is a real question for a law firm. Stenograph processes audio and deletes it afterward, never stores it, and never uses your content to train AI models. It does not sign a business associate agreement. Where a matter calls for a fully offline workflow, an on device product such as Dragon Legal on a Windows machine is the better fit. Check your state bar guidance on cloud tools and tell clients if your engagement terms require it.
Who buys speech to text software in a law practice
Solo practitioners and small firms
Draft letters, demand letters and file notes by voice without a typing pool. See dictation software for solo attorneys.
Litigators and in house counsel
Dictate memos between hearings and transcribe client interviews in the same account.
Firms leaving a secretary queue
When attorneys draft their own documents, the queue is a delay and a cost. Compare the BigHand alternative and SpeechLive alternative pages.
Mac and mixed device lawyers
A Mac user cannot run Dragon Legal. See the Dragon Legal alternative and the Mac option.
When another tool is the better fit
We would rather lose a sale than put you on the wrong tool.
- You need a certified record of a deposition or hearing. Hire a court reporter. No AI replaces one.
- You work offline on Windows and want a one time license. Dragon Legal fits better.
- You need a business associate agreement. Stenograph does not sign one.
- You only want meeting summaries with a bot in the call. A meeting notetaker is simpler, though see the Otter alternative for law firms if client consent is a concern.
What speech to text software for a law practice costs
Solo is 49 USD per month, or 24 USD per month billed yearly, for one person with unlimited dictation. Pro is 99 USD per month, or 49 USD billed yearly, and adds 900 transcription minutes. Team is 299 USD per month, or 149 USD billed yearly, for up to five people with a shared dictionary and one invoice. Enterprise is 999 USD per month, or 499 USD billed yearly, for up to 20 people with SSO, SCIM and an audit log. If speech to text saves one billable hour a month, Solo has paid for itself. For recorded calls only, see the legal transcription software pricing breakdown.
Questions lawyers ask about speech to text software
What is the best speech to text software for lawyers?
It depends on how you work. A lawyer on a Mac, or one who also dictates on a phone and transcribes calls, is best served by Stenograph. A Windows user who wants offline recognition and macros should look at Dragon Legal. For certified depositions use a court reporter.
Is speech to text accurate enough for legal documents?
For letters, emails, memos and first drafts, yes, when you add names and terms to a dictionary and review the output. Treat the result as a draft. For filings, sworn statements and anything certified, review closely or use a human service.
Can speech to text transcribe a client call?
Yes. Record on your own device or upload a file, and you get a transcript with timestamps and speaker labels. Get consent from everyone on the call where state law requires it.
Does speech to text work in Word and Clio?
Stenograph types at the cursor in any text field, so it works in Word, Outlook, Gmail, Google Docs and browser based systems such as Clio and MyCase.
Is client information safe in cloud speech to text?
Stenograph deletes audio after processing and never trains models on your content. It does not sign a business associate agreement. Check your bar guidance and your engagement terms before using any cloud tool on client matters.
Is there a free trial?
You can try the demo on this page without an account, then pick a plan when you are ready.
